What Should I Watch Out For When Holding Posts in Several Countries?
It is not in every case impermissible for the same person to hold posts in several micronations or organisations at the same time; it can allow communities to share experience and talent. But where a post involves decision-making, diplomatic representation, confidential material or competing interests, particular attention must be paid to the boundaries of responsibility.
Before accepting a post, first confirm with each side the authorisation attached to the role, the scope of the work, the confidentiality requirements and the time expected. If two posts might lead to opposite decisions on the same issue, the situation should be disclosed to those responsible, and arrangements such as recusal, restrictions on the flow of information or adjustment of duties should be discussed.
Do not carry one side's internal information, account permissions or unpublished decisions over to the other, and do not make commitments in the name of either side without authorisation. When a post changes, permissions should be returned and a record of the handover left behind.
Each community may decide for itself whether to restrict the holding of multiple posts and how such posts are to be declared. Clear rules, transparent disclosure and respect for each side's authority will do more to maintain trust than simply prohibiting conflicts of interest or ignoring potential ones.
