What Is a Microstate?

“Microstate” or “micronation” generally denotes a political or community entity that claims statehood but is not widely recognised internationally. Entities within the Chinese-speaking micronational community take very diverse forms: some stress institutional and political development, some centre on history, art, games or other shared interests, and some operate mainly online.

Consequently, the possession of physical territory, the number of members, or recognition by other states cannot on their own be used to measure the value of a micronational community. Joining a community, creating national worldbuilding, and establishing a system of governance that can keep operating are different levels of participation.

If an entity wishes to develop the functions of statehood, it can progressively establish clear membership, methods of decision-making, a division of administrative duties, external representation and record-keeping. These capacities take time to cultivate and need not all be in place at the moment of founding; but external claims, actual capacity and the records kept should be as consistent as possible.

There is no single fixed model of a micronational community that suits everyone. This archive therefore uses “microstate” as a general term for communities and political entities, and when discussing diplomacy, institution-building or territory, sets out each case according to its actual institutions and activities.
